The first attempt to start the German Seniors Residence was in 1913, but World War I and World War II lead to these attempts being put on hold. Due to the driving force of the German Women's Federation, roof wetting of the new German Old Age Home (now called the German Seniors Residence) finally happened on 25 November 1946.
The German Seniors Residence - A Non-Profit Organisation
The German Seniors Residence is a section 21 company - a non-profit organisation, but not a welfare organisation. Critical to the running of the home are donations and money raised at our annual fundraiser - the Christmas Bazaar.
The home is supported by 3 organisations:
- The German Women Federation of Johannesburg - provide social and entertainment functions at the home and assist those residents who require financial help;
- Johanniter Order - who assist with fundraising;
- ELCSA - look after the religious wellbeing of the residents.
Management of The German Seniors Residence
The home is administered by the administrative manager - Michaela Thomas. The support to the administrative manager comes from the directors of each of the supporting organizations and a treasurer. The other support comes from all the employees of the German Seniors Residence.
Michaela has been the administrative manager at the German Seniors Residence for over 16 years. After her father died, Michaela wanted to give something back to the community.
